We live outside of city limits, so we are responsible for arranging our own trash service. For years, we used Jerry’s Trash Removal out of Solsberry, IN. They did a great job, even calling us early one morning when we forgot to put our trash out. We didn’t have to buy a special trash can and we were able to dispose of six 55 gallon trash bags per week.
We paid about $13.00 per month.
This is about $156.00 per year.
As we started to recycle everything that we could, we realized that we were able to cut down our trash considerably. Now we average about one and a half 13 gallon bags per week. (Bryan would like me to note that it would be less if we didn’t have cats. Cats=kitty litter. We still use the scoopable, clay kind that cannot be recycled or biodegrade. The cats will not use Feline Pine or Yesterday’s News. They are iffy about Swheat Scoop. They are divas).
One and a half bags per week meant that we didn’t have much for the guys from Jerry’s to pick up, so we started looking for other alternatives. We thought about just taking our trash to the in-laws and paying for trash stickers ($2.00 each for a 35 gallon bag). This seemed like a great alternative until we heard about the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District’s program. If you buy these special orange bags, you can throw away any of your non-recyclable waste that fits inside them FOR FREE!!! And, there is not limit to how many bags you can drop off at a time. A roll of 20 15-gallon bags costs $10.00. Making each bag only 50 cents.
So, we take our trash with our recycling each month and we are currently averaging about five bags per month.
Five bags per month equals $2.50 per month in orange trash bags. $2.50 per month times 12 months per year is $30.00 per year.
Savings per year- $126.00!
